Here are three Good Friday prayer stations submitted by Jason Huffman. He led his youth group in an exercise to create the stations on their own. Read about their process of Youth Created Prayer Stations.
Each of the stations below include Items needed, Scripture, Reading and Instructions. Print the Scripture, Reading and Instructions on separate pieces of paper and post at the station. Feel free to adapt or change stations to meet your group or situation needs.
Casting Lots
Items Needed: Dice
Scripture : When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.” This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, “They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.” So this is what the soldiers did.-John 19:23-24
Reading: The soldiers who crucified Jesus were looking right at the King of Kings, yet were distracted by immediate gain.
Instructions: Take one of the dice and roll it one time. When your number is rolled, think of that many things that distract you from your walk with Jesus. Say a prayer asking God to help remove these distractions.
Crown of Thorns
Items Needed: Crown of Thorns
Scripture: They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. –Matthew 27:28-30
Reading: Jesus was mocked as a false king with a crown of thorns. The large, poisonous needles would have dug into some of the most tender flesh on his body. This was not standard procedure, but was only done for Jesus.
Instructions: Feel the thorns on the crown. Imagine the pain he endured. Think of one thing in your life that has caused or is causing you pain. Ask God to heal your pain.
Bitter Gall
Items Needed: Vinegar, Bowl for Vinegar, Cotton Balls, Bowl or trash can for discarded cotton balls.
Scripture: “They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it.” –Matthew 27:33-34
Reading: This sour, vinegar-like mixture would have not only quenched his thirst, but also alleviated Jesus’ pain. When Jesus realized it contained an anesthetic, he refused to drink it.
Instructions: Dip a cotton swab in the bowl of vinegar and touch it on your tongue. Remember that in Jesus, God became human to taste the bitterness of human life and even death on a cross.
Thank Jesus for enduring the cross for you.
