Summer temperatures are already scorching but mission trips and camps mean that we will spend a lot of time outside. When you are on a mission trip like U.M. ARMY, you need ways to keep you and your kids cool. Here are 5 things you can take out to sites that will give a little relief from the heat.
Frozen Capri Sun –
A box of capri sun in the freezer the night before can be a great treat on the worksite. Take a pair of scissors with you and they can be cut open and eaten frozen like a popsicle. Leave them out or in a cooler and they will slowly melt to enjoy later.
Frozen Jello –
Frozen jello and pudding cups are a good way to cool off. Take some spoons and they are like a frozen ice, but when they begin to thaw they will return to normal cool jello.
Frozen Pudding –
Are you starting to sense a theme? Just like jello, you can throw the pudding cups in the freezer and then pass them out on your worksite. Frozen they are like ice cream or they will return to their normal state and still be yummy.
Frozen Towels –
Ok don’t eat these but this is a simple way to help kids stay cool. Take wash cloths and put them in a cooler with ice water. When you go out you can pass out the cold towels for them to put on the back of their necks.
Ice Pops –
Frozen tubes of flavored drink mix are a classic summer give away. Pro tip – Take them out of the box and layer them crossways in the freezer for best freezing. When they thaw they will return to just flavored juice but they can easily be refrozen.
Bonus – Frozen Pickles –
I don’t like pickles but many said this was their favorite treat. Cut whole pickles lengthwise into quarters and then individually bag in ziplocks and put in the freezer. Again not everyone will like them, but for some it might be their favorite treat
This gives you one frozen treat idea for each day of a typical five day mission trip. Take one per day or mix and match each day. The best way for your students to stay safe however is always water. Encourage them to drink water as often as possible.
