I am taking time to finish up a post series of Good Friday Prayer Station ideas. These were created by my friend Jason Huffman and his youth group a few years back. At the end of this post there are links to the other stations in this series.
Unleavened Bread
Items Needed – Plate and bread
17 “Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread, because it was on this very day that I brought your divisions out of Egypt. Celebrate this day as a lasting ordinance for the generations to come. 18 In the first month you are to eat bread made without yeast, from the evening of the fourteenth day until the evening of the twenty-first day. 19 For seven days no yeast is to be found in your houses. And anyone, whether foreigner or native-born, who eats anything with yeast in it must be cut off from the community of Israel. 20 Eat nothing made with yeast. Wherever you live, you must eat unleavened bread. 26 And when your children ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’ 27 then tell them, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to theLord, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.’” Then the people bowed down and worshiped. ” -Exodus 12:17-20, 26-27
These are the words God gave Moses in Exodus to save the Israelites from the final plague-death of children. Unleavened bread was a symbol of humility before God. When Jewish people observed this feast they humbled themselves and remembered God’s deliverance from death. It was this very same meal Jesus was having that night of the last supper.
Take a piece of bread and eat it. Humble yourself before God and thank the Lord for his salvation.
Foot Washing
Items needed: Bowl or basin of water, Towels, Table
2 The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
When he concluded, he said:
14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. –John 13:2-5, 14-17
Offer your hands for washing. As your hands are cleansed, remember that Jesus lowered himself to serve us and that we should serve others.
King of The Jews
Items Needed: Medium Sized Cross, Table, Markers, Small Pieces of Paper
Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth, the king of the jews. Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”
Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.” –John 19:19-22
Jesus’ only “crime” was that he claimed to be the Son of God-the king of the Jews. All of the onlookers that day would have read the sign. Each one had to make a decision. “Was he a king or not?”
Is Jesus your king? If not, ask him to be your king right now. Take a card and write “Be King Of My _____________ (Life, Heart, Family Etc…)
