There are a few differences I have noticed about #Nywc this time from last time I went over 5 years ago. Fewer but longer intensive workshops. Less flash and more focus. More about the youth director and less about all the stuff we can do. I just got the sense that it was all about caring for those who care for us. The youth directors and volunteers.
One way this was evident was with the introduction of family groups. I was definitely skeptical when they told us about these. After going through them I am glad we did. In fact, I had to leave early here from #Nywc, but I made sure to stay for my family group time.
We were divided into rooms, and then we chose our own circles of 8 or so people. We were then guided through questions, videos, and discussion. We talked about our heart for ministry, shared our struggles that we were facing, got to know each other of just for a little bit of time.
It showed me that no matter where we are, or the size of our group, we all have similar struggles. It reminded me that it’s not just about me and my group. It reminded me that we are just a small part in what God is doing in the world, it’s now about me.
I one of our groups a member shared this thought. “We are all volunteers in God’s youth ministry.”
We are all volunteers. It doesn’t rest on our shoulders. What if we were the volunteer youth workers in God’s youth group that we wished we had in ours? This and many more revelations came forth in this time of community and sharing. I am thankful for my family group time. I hope we can stay in touch and follow-up with each other throughout the year.
If you went to #NYWC what did you think about the family groups?
Is important to meet with other youth directors, of different denominations, different situations?
What helps you keep perspective in ministry?
