One of the most fun events we have ever done has been Color Powder Games. I first wrote about this four years ago with How to Do Your Own Color Games. That first post shared everything you need to know from where to purchase the color powder, how to put it into socks so it last longer, and several games you can play. Since that time we have done our color wars every year, and we have added some new games along the way.
Color Powder Games
Over Under –
Students line up behind one another in two or more lines
Color sock is given to first person in the line
On go, they have to pass it over their head to the next person
That person passes it under their legs to the next person
Continue till the last person in line gets the sock
They run to the front of the line and start the process again
The game is over when the original first person in line is once again at the front.
Steal the Bacon
Groups line up in a line facing each other
Number off starting at opposite ends of the line.
Color sock is placed in the middle
Caller calls a number. The student who is that number runs to the middle of the line to get the sock*
You get one point for any of the following:
Picking up the sock and running it back over your line without getting tagged
Tagging the person who has picked up the sock
If the someone on the other team picks up the sock then drops it
4 Corners
Place 4 laundry baskets in a square
divide group into 4 teams and have them line up behind each basket
place a color sock in each basket
On go – first person in line from each team runs to any basket, picks up a color sock and returns it to their basket.
Once they return the next person goes.
The goal is to get three color socks into your basket
You cannot block or guard your color socks
Additional socks may be added by the referee if needed
Color toss –
Everyone picks a partner.
Everyone then lines up in front of their partner in two long lines, finger tip to finger tip
Color Socks are given to one line.
On go the group with the socks must toss their sock underhand to their partner
Everyone then takes one step back and partners toss the sock back
If you drop your sock you are out
Team that throws the sock the furtherest is the winner.
Mystery Balloon
Balloons are filled with a little powder (three colors for three teams) then blown up and tied
Teams send one person up to the front. They pick a balloon and sit on the chair.
Then they hold the balloon over their head and pop it with a pin
If the balloon is your teams color, you get 3 points. If the balloon is another team’s color that team gets 1 point
Capture the Color –
Adults go and place color socks around the field.. hid them.. be tricky
Adults go and hide dodgeball in the playing area (really be tricky)
A basket is placed at each team’s base.
On Go team members try to find the dodgeball and bring them back to their base
Members use the color socks and throw them at the opposing team
If you get hit with a color sock you must drop whatever you have, (dodgeball or sock) and return to your base
You must check in with your base commander who will have you do a small task (do 5 jumping jacks, count to 100, sing I’m a little teapot etc..)
You can then return to the game
An adult counts the number of dodgeballs returned to the basket. At anytime an adult can re-hide dodgeballs so they are in play again
At the end of time the team with the most dodgeball return to base wins
Free For all –
Take the color powder socks – Throw them at each other.. no points just messy
Final Foto-
We need to save enough powder for every person to be able to have a handful. We will take a photo of everyone throwing their color powder in the air.
