I really do not have a magic formula as to why this sudden, if only on a small scale, growth. I can tell you however that there are three things I have done and maybe they will help.
1. Share Freely – My most popular post is about our photo scavenger hunt. It includes how we do it, and a link to a sample list. You don't have to sign up to get the list, it's just a simple google docs link.
2. Write Often – I do not have a set blogging schedule but I do write as often as I can. If I'm gone on a youth trip I will tend to write less, but then pick back up when I am back to my computer. Lately I have been working on a series called Ipad Only Youth Ministry where I am finding ways to do things without being tied to the computer. This allows me to write from anywhere, and more often.
3. Write About Anything – I have a few series, and a few topics I write about frequently, but I typically use my blog to share my thoughts, ideas, successes, failures, trials and triumphs of youth ministry. One day it may be a game a recently learned, the next post may be a list of the songs the new songs we are using in youth worship.
That's about it. What do you do?
Great post Russel! I have been thinking about many of the same issues. So here are a few questions your post raises in my mind…
1. If there are not parameters for topics, do you have other guidelines for yourself about posts, like word count, readability, etc?
2. Do you push out your blog in any ways other than social media and subscriber lists, and is there a “best day” to post?
3. Do you have a favorite WP plugin that helps you a lot?
I think the biggest challenge for me in keeping up with my blog has been time. I need to manage my time just a little better and commit to the blog just a little more.
