This is third post in a series about starting a Youth Band. In part one we discussed our reasons for wanting to start a youth worship band. Then part two talked about some ways you could have a worship time without a youth worship band.
In this third post I want to talk about what our role as a youth worship band is. Before you play a note, print a piece of music or plug in a monitor you need to know what your role is. Why is it you are up on the stage.
You are the accompaniment track for the congregation.
Your purpose is to urge, allow, encourage, teach, nudge, or facilitate the congregation to sing praises to God.
Sometimes this is by playing and singing more strongly, to help the congregation, teach them the song or support them.
Sometimes this is by dropping out completely and just allowing the voices of the congregation to be heard with out the accompaniment.
You are the accompaniment track. You are not the main focus.
What do you think about this? I’d love to hear your discussion in the comments below.
