Last week I shared how we made our own 4 Square in the Air court. Basically it is a bunch of PVC Pipe and connectors that makes a 4 square court of about 8×8 ft squares 7 ft off of the ground.
Sunday night was our first night to try it out. Here’s how we played.
4 Square In The Air
1. Number the squares 1-4. #1 is the King square, and number 4 is the starting square.
2. The King square person serves to any of the other squares. That person must then hit it over the bars into any square.
3. There is only one hit per square (see below for exception)
4. Once the ball hits the floor after passing through a square that person is out. Everyone rotates up one space. A new person comes into the starting square.
5. Play as long as you want.
As we played we had a few rulings that came up that we made for our group. You can use these if you like.
1. If a person hits the ball and hit hits a bar and comes back into their square they can hit it again.
2. No spiking the ball/ Arm can go above but not extend across the bar. This was to help calm down some of our more tall athletic types, but mostly so they wouldn’t come down and break the court.
2. For added fun put 2 or 3 persons in a square. Still only one hit per square. They must communicate.
3. The ball we used was a kids playground ball. Lighter than a volleyball but heavier than an inflatable beach ball. It seemed to be the right weight.
The 4 square game was designed and patented by a youth guy. Because of the patent, it is illegal to make your own set.
